LGPS have now implemented the changes necessary to make the scheme compliant with the provisions of the new workplace pensions regulations and in particular the auto enrolment provisions.
Effective from 1st October the new regulations include the following provisions:
- Contracts of 3 months and less – previous restrictions have been dropped and these short term members can opt-in. Employers will have to apply the postponement provisions in all cases though
- Employers must enrol contractually as active members all employees when they become designated usually their first date of employment.
- Employers should amend or update their recruitment / induction processes to ensure that there is no suggestion that employees are being coerced to opt out
- The changes are effective from 1st October irrespective of the actual staging date. Ultimately this could mean employers having to re-enrol opt outs at their actual staging date
- The ability to opt out before the first day of employment has been removed
The LPFA have much more detail on the changes in both summary and detail for affected employers. If you have any questions on auto enrolment please contact us and we will endeavour to assist.
